We confirm that we have been advised by the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs that our company has won the tender to supply a ferry service to Cape Clear Island from 1 January 2011 for eight years. The company has agreed to purchase the ‘Island Princess’ currently operating to Clare Island, Co Mayo by mid March 2011 for the service. The vessel was built in 1997 and is licensed to carry 94 passengers in Summer and 46 in Winter. She has a crane and can carry 8 tons of cargo.
This vessel represents a significant upgrading/modernisation of the service; the main saloon has confortable seating and is bright and airy with large port holes. In fine weather passengers can avail of bow-stern access as well as upper deck seating to best enjoy the panoramic views in the vicinity.
The engines are extremely fuel efficient leading to an estimated reduction of 33,000 kg in CO2 emissions in an average year compared to the previous island ferry.
The award of the tender is subject to the standard 16 day delay before it can be fully formalised.
The company wishes to thank all those who have assisted us in various ways including our crews, shareholders, other stakeholders and Naomh Ciarán 11 Oileán Chléire Teo.
Séámus Ó Drisceoil,
Secretary.
